Where to stay near Gladstone
Four parts of the region take most of the visitors, and they suit completely different trips. Here's the honest version — including when you'd be better off staying in the city than out here with us.
Gladstone accommodation clusters in four places: the CBD and harbour, the southern approach along the Bruce Highway, the township of Calliope about 20 minutes out, and the beach towns of Tannum Sands and Boyne Island. Which one is right depends almost entirely on whether you'll have a car and what brought you here.
We're in Calliope, so we have an interest in this. We've still written it straight — there are trips where the city is simply the better call, and saying so is cheaper for everyone than a disappointed guest.

Gladstone CBD & the harbour
The centre of town, walking distance to the East Shores foreshore precinct, the marina and Auckland Hill. The Southern Great Barrier Reef boats leave from Gladstone Marina, and the harbour cruises with them.
Best if you're here for the water, you're flying in without a hire car, or you want to walk to dinner instead of drive to it.

South Gladstone & the highway approach
The corridor where the Bruce Highway feeds into town from the south. Closer to the industrial and port side of the city, and quick to get onto the highway in either direction — but there's less within walking distance once you've parked.
Best if you're working the southern side of the city and want the shortest possible commute.

Calliope — where we are
A small township on the Dawson Highway right at the Bruce Highway junction, about 20 minutes south-west of the CBD. Gladstone Airport sits between the two, roughly 10 minutes from here. It's quiet, it's green, parking is free and there's room for a work ute or a caravan-sized vehicle. You will drive everywhere.
Best if you're breaking a long highway run, working a Gladstone roster, flying early, or you simply want to sleep somewhere that isn't a main road.

Tannum Sands & Boyne Island
The region's beach towns, bridge-linked either side of the Boyne River, with a patrolled main beach and the 15 km Turtleway bikeway running between them. About 30 minutes from us and a similar run into Gladstone.
Best if you're here on holiday with the family and the beach is the point. Less practical as a work base.
Hotel, motel or cabin
Which kind of place you're actually booking
Where you stay is one decision. What sort of property you book is a second one, and it shapes the trip more than most people expect.
Hotels and serviced apartments are concentrated in the Gladstone CBD and around the harbour. Lifts, a staffed desk, somewhere to eat downstairs, and a car park you share with everyone else in the building. They earn their keep when you've flown in without a car and want to walk to dinner.
Motels around Gladstone sit along the highway approaches and out through the townships, which is where we are. The trade is a plain one: you give up walking distance to a restaurant, and you get to park at your own door on the ground floor, with room for a ute or a van, and a highway you can be back on in a couple of minutes. If you're driving to Gladstone rather than flying into it, that trade is usually worth making.
Self-contained cabins are the smallest group of the three, and the one worth reading the fine print on. "Self-contained" gets used loosely — sometimes it means a real kitchenette, sometimes it means a bar fridge and a kettle. Past about a week, that stops being a detail and starts being your food budget.
We're a garden motel at Calliope, twenty minutes south-west of the Gladstone CBD, with self-contained cabins among the rooms. What's actually in the cabins is set out in full — including what isn't in them.
Straight answer
When we're the wrong choice
If you're arriving without a car and want to be able to walk out for a meal, stay in the city. If you have an early boat from Gladstone Marina, the twenty minutes back into town at dawn is a real cost. And if you need a room on a Saturday and want dinner without driving, our restaurant is closed at weekends — the city has more options.
What we're good at is the opposite trip: a car in the driveway, a quiet night in the gardens, an early start, and a highway you can be back on in two minutes.

Calliope is about 20 minutes' drive south-west of the Gladstone CBD on the Dawson Highway, close to the Bruce Highway junction. Gladstone Airport sits between the two — roughly 10 minutes from Calliope.
If you want to walk to dinner, the marina and the reef boats, stay in the city. If you are driving anyway — for work, for the lake, or as a break in a long highway run — staying out at Calliope buys you quiet, free parking with room for a work vehicle, and a shorter run to the airport.
