A relaxed two-day plan that uses Parklands as your quiet base — markets and gardens one day, lake or beach the next, and dinner waiting on the grounds each night.
You don't need to base yourself in the city to see the best of the Gladstone region. From Calliope you're 10 minutes from the airport and about 20 from the harbour — close enough to roam by day, far enough to actually sleep at night. Here's an easy 48 hours that keeps the driving short and the evenings quiet.
Day one, morning — settle in and go local
Drop your bags and start close to home. The Calliope River Historical Village sits about 10 minutes north, a nine-acre collection of restored timber buildings on the river. If your dates line up with a market morning (roughly every two months, 7:30 am – 12:30 pm), it becomes one of the region's largest country markets — well worth timing your stay around.
Day one, afternoon — into Gladstone
Head into the harbour city, about 20–25 minutes up the highway. Wander the East Shores foreshore and marina, let the kids loose on the free water play, then take in the view from Auckland Hill Lookout over the inlet and out to Curtis and Facing Islands. Garden lovers should swap in Tondoon Botanic Gardens — 83 hectares of native gardens, free to enter, with an easy lakeside loop.

Day one, evening — dinner without driving
Back at Parklands, the easiest table in Calliope is the one already on the grounds. The on-site buffet restaurant runs dinner Monday to Friday (paid and subject to availability), so there's no getting back in the car — just a quiet meal and an early night before the next leg. Visiting on a weekend? Calliope and Gladstone have plenty of other options nearby.
Day two — pick your kind of day
Anglers and nature-lovers should point the car at Lake Awoonga (about 25 minutes), a barramundi-stocked lake with boat ramps, picnic lawns and 220-plus bird species. Beach people will prefer Tannum Sands (about 30 minutes) — a patrolled main beach and the 15 km Turtleway bikeway linking it to Boyne Island. Either way you're back on the highway by mid-afternoon, rested and ready.
