Fishing, lakes & the outdoors near Calliope
Barramundi at first light, a landmark peak to climb, and 15 km of coastal bikeway — the Gladstone region rewards anyone who likes to be outside.
Central Queensland turns it on for the outdoors. Within half an hour of the resort you've got one of the state's best freshwater fisheries, a river full of history, patrolled beaches and a genuinely challenging summit. Here's where to point the day.
Lake Awoonga — the barra capital
About 25 minutes from Calliope, Lake Awoonga is Central Queensland's favourite freshwater playground. It's heavily stocked with barramundi, with boat ramps, shaded picnic lawns and free barbecues. Even if you don't fish, more than 220 bird species are recorded here, so it's a beautiful, easy morning by the water.

Mount Larcom — earn the view
The region's landmark peak rises to 632 metres and is visible from most of Gladstone. The climb is a real one — allow about five hours return, start early, carry plenty of water and save it for the cooler months. The reward is a summit view that stretches to the coast and islands.

Coast & bikeway
At Tannum Sands you'll find a patrolled main beach and the 15 km Turtleway bikeway running along the foreshore to Boyne Island — flat, scenic and easy with kids or a hire bike. The main beach is also a spot to try a kitesurf or stand-up-paddle lesson.

On the doorstep
Closer to home, the Calliope River and the Historical Village give you an easy riverside wander, and there's a local golf course and bowls club in town for a relaxed afternoon. You don't have to go far to be outside.
