A day-tripper's guide to the Southern Great Barrier Reef
Calliope sits at the quiet, southern end of the reef — coral cays, turtles and clear lagoons, with a fraction of the crowds you'll find further north. Here's how to actually get out there.
The Gladstone region is one of the main gateways to the Southern Great Barrier Reef — the Capricorn and Bunker island groups, scattered coral cays and the famous coral lagoons. It takes a little planning, so here's the honest version of what's possible and how the trips run.
What's out there
The southern reef's islands include Heron, Lady Musgrave, Masthead, North West and Wilson — coral cays ringed by reef rather than the big resort islands of the north. The water is clear, the snorkelling is excellent, and turtles nest on several of the cays in season.
- Heron Island — a natural coral cay with a research station and a single resort
- Lady Musgrave Island — a protected lagoon famous for day cruises
- Curtis & Facing Islands — closer harbour islands reached by local ferry
Heron Island — overnight only
Heron sits about 72 km offshore. The ferry from Gladstone Marina takes roughly two hours, with check-in at the marina well before departure. Importantly, there are no day trips to Heron — it's an overnight (or longer) stay. If you want the classic coral-cay experience, plan it as a trip in itself.

Lady Musgrave — the day cruise
For a single big day on the reef, Lady Musgrave Island is the pick. The main day cruises depart from the Town of 1770, about 1.5–2 hours south of Calliope, and run out to the island's sheltered lagoon for snorkelling, glass-bottom-boat tours and guided walks. It's a long but rewarding day — or pair it with a night down on the Agnes Water / 1770 coast.

Planning it well
Reef trips depend on weather and season, and they book out in peak periods, so reserve ahead and keep your dates flexible. Build in a buffer day at Parklands either side — it's an easy, quiet base to come back to, and you're only 10 minutes from the airport if you're flying in or out.
